Description

This lot includes a manual hand-cranked toy sewing machine and a lithographed tin container filled with various sewing notions. The sewing machine is constructed with a red-painted cast iron body and metal components, including a needle plate and a side-mounted hand wheel. While the manufacturer label on the base is present but not clearly legible, the machine design is highly consistent with the Stitch Mistress or Gateway Junior models manufactured by Gateway Engineering Company during the mid-20th century. The mechanism is operated by a manual crank that drives the needle bar. The round tin features colorful lithographed graphics depicting Western historical scenes, including text referencing Coronado in 1540, La Salle in 1685, and the Chisholm Trail. The tin serves as storage for an assortment of vintage thread spools, including wooden and plastic types from brands such as Singer, McCrory, Trusew, and Coats and Clark. The threads include materials such as mercerized cotton and spun polyester.

Condition report:

The sewing machine shows signs of age and use, including scattered paint chips and losses to the red finish. Metal parts exhibit a natural aged patina and minor surface oxidation. The functional operation of the crank mechanism has not been tested. The lithographed tin shows typical wear, including surface scratches, minor dings, and some internal oxidation.
