Description
A vintage miniature butter churn featuring a square-form cobalt blue glass base fitted with a manual cast iron mechanical assembly. The glass base displays embossed lettering: the word CLEVELAND is embossed vertically on the left side of the face, and OHIO is embossed vertically on the right side. Along the bottom curved edge of the same face, the text THE ARCO CO is embossed. The mechanical top is constructed of cast iron and features a side-mounted manual crank with a turned wooden handle. This crank operates a set of gears that drive an internal wooden paddle visible through the translucent blue glass. The Arco Company of Cleveland, Ohio, was historically known as a manufacturer of paints and varnishes, indicating this item may have been produced as a promotional or advertising piece. The design follows the form of a miniature Dazey-style butter churn.
Condition report:
The cast iron mechanism shows significant surface oxidation and a dark brown patina consistent with age. The wooden handle exhibits wear, surface abrasions, and darkening from use. The cobalt blue glass base appears to be in good condition with the embossed lettering remaining crisp and no visible chips or cracks. The mechanical action appears complete and functional.
