5.28.26 MAY ANTIQUE & GLASS AUCTION
Lot 287:
Description
This antique hand-cranked butter churn was manufactured by the Dazey Churn and Manufacturing Company. The item consists of a square-shouldered jar crafted from deep cobalt blue glass, fitted with a cast iron screw-on lid and mechanical assembly. The glass jar is embossed on one side with the text Dazey Churn & Mfg Co in a circular arrangement around a central ampersand. An adjacent side of the jar features embossed lettering for the patent date Feb-14-22 and the location St Louis USA. The cast iron frame at the top is embossed with the letters D A Z E Y. The mechanical system utilizes a side-mounted crank with a turned wooden handle to drive a bevel gear mechanism, which rotates internal paddles visible through the glass.
Condition report:
The cobalt blue glass jar shows significant internal dark staining and residue but appears to be free of major chips or structural cracks. The cast iron lid, gears, and crank handle exhibit heavy oxidation and overall surface rust. The turned wooden handle is intact but shows weathering and signs of age-related wear. The mechanical movement has not been tested for smoothness or functionality.
