5.28.26 MAY ANTIQUE & GLASS AUCTION
Lot 286:
Description
This manual hand-crank butter churn is composed of a square-bodied cobalt blue glass jar and a cast iron mechanical top assembly. The glass jar features embossed identification on one face, with S. J. & CO. in an arched format at the top, a central maple leaf logo, and PHILA in a lower arc. The jar is designed with rounded corners, a flat base, and a threaded neck. The cast iron mechanism is a gear-driven system featuring a side-mounted crank with a turned wooden handle that operates an internal metal dasher or paddle for agitation. The assembly is secured to the jar by a threaded metal collar. While styled after 19th-century kitchenware, this specific cobalt blue variant with these markings is highly sought after by collectors of early 20th-century style housewares.
Condition report:
The cobalt blue glass jar is in good condition, showing typical light surface wear and minor scratches from use, with no visible chips or cracks. The cast iron mechanism displays significant surface oxidation and a dark brown rust-colored patina across all components. The mechanical assembly remains intact and operational, though it shows surface pitting characteristic of aged iron. The wooden handle exhibits darkening, staining, and surface abrasions consistent with its age and handling.
