Description
A 19th-century brass Lucerna oil lamp, also frequently referred to as a whale oil lamp. The piece features a central baluster-turned stem supported by a weighted, circular domed base. The oil reservoir is equipped with four projecting nozzles for wicks. Positioned above the reservoir is an adjustable, butterfly-shaped reflector shield that moves vertically along the stem and is secured by a brass thumb screw. The lamp is topped with a decorative scrolled hook designed for hanging or carrying. Two original tools are suspended from integrated brass chains: a pair of wick trimmers and a bell-shaped snuffer. The construction consists of cast and lathe-turned components for the stem and reservoir, while the reflector shield is fashioned from sheet brass. No maker marks or hallmarks are visible on the item.
Condition report:
The lamp is in good antique condition, characterized by a heavy and unpolished aged patina. There are significant areas of green verdigris oxidation, most notably concentrated around the wick nozzles and within the crevices of the base. The brass surfaces show minor wear, including light scratches and small pits consistent with age and domestic use. The mechanical adjustment for the reflector shield remains functional.
