5.28.26 MAY ANTIQUE & GLASS AUCTION
Lot 442:
Description
This lot contains two American ceramic storage jars. The first is a cylindrical crock featuring a cream-colored glaze and dark green banding at the rim and base. The exterior is decorated with a hand-painted scene of a barn featuring the Mail Pouch Tobacco advertising slogan Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco Treat Yourself to the Best. The folk-art style illustration includes a large green tree, clouds, and birds. There are no maker marks visible on this piece. The second item is a lidded jar designed to resemble a wooden barrel or bucket, attributed to McCoy Pottery as the Old Oaken Bucket pattern. It is finished in a glossy tan glaze with brown accents highlighting the molded wood-grain texture. The lid includes a molded rope-style handle. The letters USA are embossed on the lower horizontal band of the jar body. The piece features two ceramic lugs for a wire bale handle.
Condition report:
Both items are in good overall condition. The barrel-style jar is missing its original wire bale handle. A small dark glaze pop is visible on the upper band of the barrel jar. The advertising crock exhibits minor surface wear and small areas of glaze variation consistent with manufacture and age.
