Description

This lot consists of two vintage kerosene lanterns with New York provenance. The first item is an Embury No. 2 Air Pilot lantern produced by the Embury Manufacturing Co. of Warsaw, New York. It is constructed of metal with a clear glass globe and a protective wire cage. The fount is embossed with EMBURY MFG. CO. / WARSAW – N.Y. U.S.A. and the side support tube is embossed with patent numbers 1985517, 2054878, and D-111578, which correspond to designs from the mid-to-late 1930s. The second item is a municipal lantern utilized by the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY). This lantern features a silver-toned metal finish and a clear glass globe. The fount is prominently embossed with the anti-theft inscription STOLEN FROM / D.S.N.Y. and includes additional embossing near the filler cap starting with the text MADE FROM. Both units include their original bail handles and typical components for tubular kerosene lamps of the mid-20th century.

Condition report:

The Embury lantern exhibits heavy surface oxidation and significant rust across the fount, chimney, and handle, with small remnants of original green paint visible in recessed areas. The DSNY lantern is in overall good vintage condition, showing typical surface wear, light oxidation, and minor paint loss consistent with municipal field use. Both clear glass globes appear intact with no visible cracks or significant chips.
