This miniature two-piece covered dish is crafted from deep cobalt blue pressed glass. The lid is molded in the form of a nesting hen featuring a stippled, textured body and stylized feathers on the tail and wings. The hen rests on a matching base characterized by a scalloped “nest” rim. This small-scale vessel was traditionally utilized as an individual salt cellar or salt dip, though it can also serve as a small trinket box. While the design is a classic of American novelty glassware often produced by glasshouses such as Degenhart, Westmoreland, or Indiana Glass, this specific example lacks visible maker marks or factory stamps.
