5.28.26 MAY ANTIQUE & GLASS AUCTION
Lot 134:
Description
A late nineteenth-century chemigraph print produced by the National Chemigraph Company of St. Louis. The image is rendered in a neoclassical relief style, depicting a partially draped woman cradling a sleeping winged cherub or Cupid holding an arrow. The lower right corner of the print features a printed mark reading NATIONAL CHEMIGRAPH COMPANY ST. LOUIS, PAT MAR. 21 – 93. The print is housed behind glass in a dark-stained wood frame featuring an ornate, gilded gesso inner border. The brown-toned mat is printed with the promotional text …COMPLIMENTS OF… HEYMAN BROS., ARTISTIC CLOTHIERS. The work is a photomechanical reproduction of a sculptural relief, typical of late Victorian decorative arts and advertising ephemera.
Condition report:
The piece is in good antique condition. The mat shows significant toning and discoloration consistent with age. The frame displays minor surface scuffs, edge wear, and scattered losses to the gilded finish on the inner border. The print itself appears well-preserved under glass with some light foxing visible in the upper corners.
