Description

An American Victorian side-by-side secretary desk and bookcase constructed from quartersawn tiger oak. The piece features a glazed bookcase beside a drop-front desk with a carved foliate motif and three lower drawers, all surmounted by an asymmetrical mirror and an elaborate scrolling crest. A metal plate is inset into the top edge of the upper drawer, though the characters incised upon it are not legible as a name.

Condition report:

Silvering degradation and graying is visible along the lower edge of the shaped mirror (photo 6). The interior writing surface of the drop-front desk exhibits significant wear, including surface scratches, finish loss, and a prominent circular ring mark (photo 10). A small area of splintering and wood loss is present on the top edge of the uppermost drawer front near the lock plate (photo 8). General surface abrasions, minor nicks, and wear to the finish are present throughout the base and legs consistent with age and use.
