Description
A salt-glazed stoneware pitcher of bulbous form featuring a slightly flared rim with a pinched pouring spout and an applied strap handle. The vessel is decorated with hand-brushed cobalt blue slip motifs, most notably a stylized foliate spray on the front. Two horizontal cobalt bands encircle the shoulder, with another single band near the base. Additional cobalt blue accents are present at the upper and lower terminals of the handle. The surface exhibits a characteristic orange peel texture typical of salt-glazed pottery. The style of decoration and form are consistent with 19th-century stoneware from the Westerwald region of Germany or American regional potteries influenced by that tradition. No maker’s marks, capacity stamps, or other inscriptions are visible on the exterior.
Condition report:
The pitcher shows signs of age and use. A visible hairline crack extends from the rim down into the body. Multiple small chips and flakes are present along the rim and spout. The surface displays typical kiln-firing imperfections, including minor pitting, small kiln pops, and some light staining and discoloration throughout.
