Description
This battery-operated Western Special Locomotive was manufactured by Modern Toys (Masudaya) in Japan. The toy is constructed of lithographed tin with specific plastic components, including the yellow dome and inner wheels. It features a mystery action mechanism intended for bump-and-go movement. The original packaging indicates the toy is designed to produce a puffing noise and whistle sound along with a flashing light. The rear of the locomotive displays the Modern Toys trademark logo, featuring a diamond shape containing the letters M and T, surrounded by the text TRADE MARK MODERN TOYS MADE IN JAPAN and PATENT NO. 557116 701370 24962. The cab sides are lithographed with the word WESTERN in gold-tone lettering. The power source is housed in a battery compartment at the rear of the cab, operated by an ON/OFF toggle switch on the underside of the chassis. The item includes its original pictorial cardboard box featuring matching manufacturer branding.
Condition report:
The locomotive is in very good cosmetic condition with vibrant lithography and minimal surface wear. All primary components, including the pistons, stack, and domes, are present and intact. The battery-operated functions and mystery action mechanism have not been tested. The original cardboard box shows significant signs of age and wear, including tears to the lid and side flaps, creasing, and heavy edge wear throughout.
